At least 64 Dead in Rio's Most Extensive Security Action on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a police operation cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.
Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes erupted when about 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the main base of a major illegal networks.
Local authorities said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Many residents were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Resident Accounts
Locals have described the hillside area - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the raid started.
Transport routes stay blocked across the area.
Criminal Expansion
The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the mission, along with dozens of firearms.
Mission Context
The combined action by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.
Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the city.

Large-scale police operations are not uncommon in Brazil prior to significant global gatherings in the South American nation.
The UN climate summit COP30 is scheduled in the city of Belem in the north in November.
