Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza Leader Departs Following Shift Towards Chicken.

The head of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have reached maximum pizza demand while diversifying the franchise into poultry items has been removed after conflicts with its governing body.

Executive Change

Rennie is exiting after only 24 months in charge, and will be succeeded on an temporary basis by the company's operations head, Frampton, while Domino's looks for a new leader.

The outgoing executive, who was with the company for a substantial period, had aimed to redirect Britain's biggest pizza delivery company towards poultry-based products, commenting earlier this month there was not “significant expansion” left in the British pizza industry. He observed poultry was the fastest-growing protein in the globe.

Governance Tensions

It is understood that there was disagreement between the CEO and the governance team over his strategy and business vision, although the company's official statement said he was leaving “as a joint decision”.

Recent Product Launch

In the autumn, Domino's introduced its chicken-focused product line – which the former chief called a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is trialling it in over 200 locations in the North West region and the province.

While the firm is still going to roll it out across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as scheduled, it views fried chicken as a supplement for its main pizza offerings.

Board Statement

Bull, the company chair, stated: “We are confident that there are a range of possibilities to enhance value and value creation in Domino's core business. We are prioritizing identifying the suitable leader to lead the careful implementation of that expansion plan.”

Market Challenges

Recently, Domino's, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said orders fell by 1.5 percent in the third quarter. In August, it alerted that the takeaway market had “become tougher” as it blamed weaker consumer confidence in the run-up to the government announcement and increasing labor expenses for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in six-month income.

Competitors are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut announced the closure of dozens of outlets a last month, after the company behind its British operations entered insolvency.

Wellness Efforts

Trying to keep up with customer preferences towards healthier eating, Domino's has introduced light items, such as its thin-crust range of bakes below 400 kcals as well as vegan and wheat-free pizzas. A family-sized pepperoni has 2,311 kcals. A family cheese pizza has 2,171 kcal, while a personal has 909 calories.

Acting Leadership

The interim chief has been with Domino's since 2021, and previously worked for the gambling company William Hill. It is believed that she is not seeking to occupy the chief executive role on a full-time basis.

Frampton stated: “Our team has a number of ongoing expansion and efficiency programs that we will be focused on executing at pace.”

She added these included additional efforts on the company's logistics network and product development, and its loyalty scheme.

The pizza chain is also in need of a full-time CFO until March 16, when Andy Andrea joins from the beverage producer C&C Group. Until then, Snow is acting financial officer.
