A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
