The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
