Thomas Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.

A single omission proved sufficient. Another and it could have seemed vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is much too clever not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy is probably going to require the involvement of the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the strategic frameworks and team pecking order essential with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.

The manager desires the player's competitive fire, his fire, but it is about using it constructively. Personal talent matters but England have learned the hard way that there is consequences when stardom prevails. Still, a point has been made.

Bellingham had much to ponder after his omission of the previous squad. He observed the national side book their place at the tournament without him. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as the coach discuss loving the group’s energy and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for his club versus their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents instead of teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has demonstrated that an international career is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after proving that he is unafraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern with the character,” the German said. “Jude displays a competitive streak. You need that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he has. We all must support him and establish a setting which he can use this edge towards opponents and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”

The star dominated the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s dead-rubber qualifiers versus one opponent and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring support and direction. Foden has not played for the national team since spring and has struggled to perform well this year but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after his display in Manchester City’s win versus Borussia Dortmund recently.

The issue, however, is how to use the various creators at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the right blend at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's game as a result.

It is hard to see the current manager making the same mistake if it hurts the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles is beneficial. He is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him close to Kane. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I have this fantasy about him for years. In my view it fits his style best.”

He conceded there are occasions when the player has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly something is not right, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to playing for his club in a particular setup, to have a defined role. Believe he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?

The manager mentioned Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and the other scoring goals from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue abounds.

Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he hinted at deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or Albania. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if Kane be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.

At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter assisting the captain to score in an international match against the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo linked up for a score. The coach will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.

“At this point eventually it falls to the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to begin against the upcoming opponents. The manager wants Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an superior one.
