Three-time National Basketball Association MVP Jokic sustained a "gut-wrenching" injury to his knee while the Denver Nuggets lost 147-123 at the Miami Heat.

Jokic sustained the injury towards the end of the second quarter following an inadvertent collision with team-mate Spencer Jones.

The other player stepped on the foot of the big man, who promptly collapsed to the ground holding his knee.

The 30-year-old, that leads the league this season in rebounds and dimes, posted a score of 21 points and eight assists in the contest before incurring the setback.

The player will have an MRI on Tuesday to assess the seriousness of the issue.

"Immediately, Jokic realized he was hurt," said Denver coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Any player that gets hurt, it's gut-wrenching, especially somebody as special as Jokic. We'll find out more tomorrow."

"We'll move on together. Obviously, right now, I am more worried just about him personally and the frustration of going through something like that."
