Worrying Number of Users Now Use E-Cigarettes, States Global Health Body
More than 100 hundred million users, comprising at minimum 15 million youth, now employ e-cigarettes, fueling a recent surge of nicotine habit, as stated by latest worldwide health reports.
Youth are, typically, nine times more prone than adults to use e-cigarettes, according to available international statistics.
Electronic cigarettes are fueling a "fresh wave" of nicotine addiction, stated a senior health official. "These devices are advertised as damage limitation but, in reality, are ensnaring children on nicotine sooner and risk weakening decades of advancement."
Young People Being 'Focused On'
"Numerous of citizens are ceasing, or not taking up tobacco usage because of tobacco control measures by nations around the globe," the representative commented.
"In response to this strong advancement, the tobacco sector is pushing back with novel nicotine items, actively focusing on young people. Governments must act faster and stronger in applying proven tobacco-control regulations," the representative added.
The vaping numbers are an estimate since several states - 109 in all, and several in African and South-East Asia - lack information.
According to the study, as of February this year, at bare minimum 86 million e-cigarette users were mature individuals, mainly in high-income nations.
And at bare minimum 15 million adolescents aged 13 and 15 currently use e-cigarettes, per surveys from 123 states.
Even though several states have tried to establish e-cigarette policies to tackle child vaping in recent years, by the close of 2024, 62 countries still had no measure in effect, and 74 states had no minimum age at which e-cigarettes can be purchased, states the health body.
Simultaneously, tobacco usage has been dropping - from an estimated 1.38 billion consumers in 2000 to 1.2 billion in 2024.
Occurrence of tobacco usage among women decreased the most - from 11% in 2010 to 6.6% in 2024.
For males, the decrease was from 41.4% in 2010 to 32.5% in 2024.
But a fifth of mature individuals worldwide yet uses tobacco.
